New York based pop/rock group Ken Nakano & the Flying Penguins recently completed their debut release, entitled "Thirsty". Two years of writing and recording have culminated in an album that is, at once, melodious and discordant; spanning cultures and traditions.
Ken Nakano grew up in a port city on the southern Japanese island of Kyushu, raised on a steady musical diet of 60's and 70's British staples and the home-grown "Mentai (men-tie) Rock", named (%aacute; la Cajun) after a spicy local food. After extensive recording and touring in Japan, Nakano moved to New York in 1988. Lengthy experiments with acoustic, hard rock, punk and even Japanese folk music landed him in numerous local groups and helped him further define his multi-faceted musical identity. It also resulted in an extensive body of material. In late 1993 he decided to record and release some of this music. His intention was not, simply, to gather together a collection of songs but to create a kind of journal that spoke of his years in New York and the music he's made there. British Rock influences are immediately apparent on "Thirsty" though Ken's unpredictable yet contagious melodies more closely trace his Japanese roots. The songs on the album, many of them in English and some in Japanese, are a refernce set that foreshadows the artist's prolific career. |
